Teacher mobility responses to wage changes: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper utilizes a Norwegian experiment with exogenous wage changes to study teacher’s turnover decisions. Within a completely centralized wage setting system, teachers in schools with a high degree of teacher vacancies in the past got a wage premium of about 10 percent during the period 1993-94 to 2002-03. The empirical strategy exploits that several schools switched status during the empirical period. In a fixed effects framework, I find that the wage premium reduces the probability of voluntary quits by six percentage points, which implies a short run labor supply elasticity of about 11⁄4 .

Towards a micro-founded theory of aggregate labor supply
We build a heterogeneous life-cycle model which captures a large number of salient features of individual labor supply, by education, over the life cycle. The model provides an aggregation theory of individual labor supply, firmly grounded on micro evidence, and is used to study the aggregate labor supply responses to changes in the economic environment. We find that the aggregate labor supply ...
متن کاملTeaching the Qur’ān and Receiving Wage from the Viewpoint of the Qur’ān
According the qur’ānic verses, God is the first teacher of the Qur’ān. The Prophet (s) used different methods to teach the Qur’ān and recommended others to teach it, especially to one’s children. The question of the permissibility or impermissibility of receiving wage for the teaching of the Qur’ān has brought about some disagreements among Muslim scholars, where each group has relied on some q...
متن کاملInternational Capital Movements and Relative Wages: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing Industries
In this paper, we use a multi-sector specific factors model with international capital mobility to examine the effects of globalization on the skill premium in U.S. manufacturing industries. This model allows us to identify two channels through which globalization affects relative wages: effects of international capital flows transmitted through changes in interest rates, and effects of international...
متن کاملRecent Immigrants as Labor Market Arbitrageurs: Evidence from the Minimum Wage.
This paper investigates the local labor supply effects of changes to the minimum wage by examining the response of low-skilled immigrants' location decisions. Canonical models emphasize the importance of labor mobility when evaluating the employment effects of the minimum wage; yet few studies address this outcome directly. Low-skilled immigrant populations shift toward labor markets with stagn...
متن کاملIs the Minimum Wage a Pull Factor for Immigrants?
This paper studies the effects of the minimum wage on immigration. I develop an analytical framework in which immigration is a function of the expected wage, which is defined as the product of immigrants’ wage and employment probability in the region of destination. In the empirical analysis I exploit the state variation in expected wages stemming from the changes in the US federal minimum wage...
